BEARS EDUCATIONAL CENTER - PORTAGE, ALASKA
A center for public education about Alaskan bears 50 miles outside of Anchorage, Alaska, along the Turnagain Arm inlet. Located at the AWCC (Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center), the most popular developed attraction in the state.
Alaska is the only state to have all three bear species: black, brown, and polar. The center is designed as a) a place for public education about bear safety and for bear viewing across a natural 18-acre habitat b) a showcase for green building techniques, and c) an interpretation of Eskimo architecture (we researched the now-vanished Eskimo building culture).
